Director of Finance and Operations (60% FTE)

The part-time Director of Finance and Operations of Beacon Hill Nursery School reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing financial operations, human resources, risk management, IT, and facilities in a small school of 110 students and 25 staff. Supervising one part-time accountant, this position requires collaboration with administrative team members and Board of Directors, as well as good communication and partnership with faculty/staff, families, and outside vendors. The schedule for this part-time position is flexible and can be customized to the needs of the candidate. Start date is negotiable, ideally by July 1, 2018.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets, protect confidential information, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Oversee school business functions, including: tuition billing and collection, accounts payable, contracting, payroll, human resources, accounting and reporting, regulatory reporting and compliance, audit, and other business administration activities.
  • Administer the annual budget and multi-year forecasting process to align with the school’s goals and mission and maintain account records related to the school’s budget.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Treasurer on financial aid policies and strategic allocation of financial aid funds; support and communicate with families in the application process
  • Provide financial reports to school leadership and the board; attend Board and Committee meetings to serve as a source of financial information to inform discussions.
  • Participate in the development of school strategy, providing recommendations, financial analysis, projections, and other data to inform the process.
  • Collaborate with and assist the Executive Director and Board of Directors in meeting fiduciary responsibilities and managing institutional risk.
  • Ensure that human resources policies and practices are clearly articulated, consistently applied, and conform to legal requirements.
  • Support the oversight of IT and facilities functions, collaborating with internal colleagues and external contractors and partners.


  • A bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, in accounting or finance related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in finance/accounting, preferably in schools
