And then there were 15!
Whole Group Times
After two wonderfully successful half days, we were so excited to welcome all 15 of our JK South students together today. The day started with our morning meeting where the children were able to introduce themselves and begin the process of getting to know each other by answering our question of the day. Today’s question was, “What is your favorite animal?” Eventually the question of the day will be used to reinforce concepts taught to the children and serve as an assessment for the teachers to see how well the children have grasped a concept. For instance, when we teach patterns during math class, the next morning for a sign in question we will ask the children to make a pattern for us using magnetic shapes. You can ask your JK student to share a new friend’s animal! We also did the calendar, the weather, the number line, and introduced the classroom exploration choices for the day.
During our Literacy block we met the wooden pieces that we will use for our Handwriting Without Tears program. This school year the children will learn to write letters and numbers using this technique. All letters can be formed using a combination of the four wooden pieces: big line, little line, big curve, and little curve. We had some fun using the wooden pieces to form the first letter of each of the children's names.
At the end of the day we read Sammy Feels Shy.

Classroom Explorations
Today the children got to decorate a library bag during our classroom exploration time! One of the perks of being a JK student is that they get to borrow a book from the BHNS Library. Every Friday we go to the Library as a class and listen to a story. After the story is done, each JK student gets to pick out a book to take home that day and bring back the following Friday. Tomorrow we will go to the Library for our first visit!
In addition to decorating Library bags the children could also:
play in the big sensory table with water, beads, and ocean gems
use paint crayons and dot stickers at the easel
craft and create at the drawing table
read books in the book loft
play in pretend
enjoy the dollhouse
play with playdough at the trapezoid table
use our small sand sensory trays
build with Legos on the rug
build with Magnatiles and gnomes on the light table
beading at the round table before meeting and snack at the round table after meeting.
