Fall Leaf Math, Math Meeting Game and Sheryl Time
Math Meeting Game
During our morning meeting time, we played a new game to help the children practice counting, develop number awareness and build gross motor skills. Each week, two children will have the opportunity to roll a die and practice counting the amount of dots that it landed on. Next, they will roll another dice that has different types of movement activities on each side. Finally, we will perform that number of exercises to build strength, motor planning, coordination, body awareness, self-regulation skills, endurance and math skills all while having fun! We have an alphabetical list of the children and today Ansel and Caroline had a turn to roll the dice to find out which movement activities we would try today. Check out the pictures below to see what we did.. Great work and workout everyone!
Leaf Math with numbers 1-6
We introduced a new math game after our morning meeting routines during a whole group time. Coming together as a whole group to introduce the game gives children the opportunity to learn about and understand the concept and purpose of a game/activity before exploring it independently during our classroom exploration time. The season of fall continues to inspire the children and teachers in the Coral Room. Materials for the game were a bare tree, one dice with dots representing numerals 1-6 and colorful leaves. Children rolled the die and either counted the dots or recognized how many dots were there without counting and then counted out that number of leaves to add to their tree. After showing the children how to play, they were welcome to try it on their own during our classroom exploration time. This activity allowed children to practice counting a set quantity, seeing a task through to completion and building math skills while having fun. It is important to build a strong foundation of number sense (the ability to understand numbers and the relationships between numbers) and the Coral Room children are getting practice through daily activities and experiences.
Sheryl Time
Sheryl joined us during our second classroom exploration time and had a fun activity for the children to try today. Everyone was able to take a break from playing to work on the activity too! The children used their strong hand muscles to squeeze a glue bottle to add drizzles and puddles of the glue onto a piece of paper. Next, they selected different colored pieces of dried pasta to place into the glue. This activity worked their larger hand muscles as well as their finger muscles while they pinched and placed the small pieces of pasta onto their paper. These guys are getting stronger everyday!
