Meeting:

Today the children signed in by putting their name next to the number that represents none! Connecting zero and none as being the same quantity wise can be a tricky concept for children this age. It often helps to ground the idea in a familiar situation. In this case teachers had the children think about if they had no cookies. What number would that be? This helped many children to determine that the proper number was zero! We have been working with the children to write the number zero. If your child is interested you can try writing it with them at home!

Literacy:

Today during literacy, we reviewed all of the Lively Letters we have learned so far: P, B, T, D, K, G, F, V, and Qu! The children are doing an amazing job learning each sound and remembering the stories and motions that go along with each letter. They especially love hearing the stories that help bring each letter to life and look forward to our group lessons!

We also broke into small groups to practice our handwriting. Today, we focused on reviewing how to write the letters L and F, giving the children a chance to practice proper letter formation while building confidence with their writing skills.

We are so proud of the growing confidence the children are showing as they continue to build their early literacy skills.

Ms. Sheryl:

This week the kids began their time with Sheryl by participating in big body movements that strengthened the muscles in their core and upper body. We want to make sure that their muscles are strong enough to hold the body in an upright position for an extended period of time (i.e., during morning meeting or while sitting at a table) and their hands are strong enough to hold fine motor tools effectively. After the kids had a chance to move and warm up, each child had the chance to practice using their helping hand to hold their paper steady while their strong hand cut out different types of lines. Cutting activities are a great way to strengthen the small muscles in the hand, which also help get them ready for more challenging fine motor tasks. If you are using scissors at home with your children, it can be helpful to say "Keep your thumb on top and use your eyes to look at the lines." Here is a little video of a fun rhyme you can use to remind your child how to use scissors.

Choice Time:

Today the children were excited to decorate Graham’s birthday pot! Graham’s birthday wishes will take place tomorrow. Another new activity today was wooden puzzles with multiple solutions! These are fun and promote plasticity in thought and problem solving.

In addition the children enjoyed:

  • Building with various materials

  • Preparing for a giant snow storm in pretend

  • Making letters out of tiny magnatiles at the light table

  • Rice and sensory noodles in the sensory table

Closing Meeting:

At the end of the day teachers read The Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess.
