Thursday 9/17
Rules
Today during snack we had a discussion. We took our first pass at making a list of rules to follow at school. We will eventually turn all these rules into positive statements, for now we just wrote down exactly what the children said.
For example, if a child suggests “no hitting” we might eventually positively reframe it as “have safe hands.”
Ms. Carly and I are impressed with all the important safety ideas we came up with! It’s important to have the children’s input when creating these rules, or agreements, for how we will stay safe and have fun at school. Children are more likely to internalize these rules when they feel part of the process of creating them.

Question of the Day
Today the children were invited to put their name tag on a heart with their first initial in it. Ms. Amy gave clues like, “I’m thinking of a friend whose name starts with the /m/ sound…Mara!” We all get practice learning the sounds that correspond with our friends’ letters.
All About Janelle!
Today Janelle shared her All About Me book! Friends practiced being a listening audience while Janelle and Ms. Carly shared her book. When Janelle was done presenting her book, she called on friends with their hands raised to listen to their connections or questions. We also showed our connections quietly, “Put your hand on your head if you like mashed potatoes!” These quiet ways of responding help us capture the excitement of making personal connections while keeping circle time quiet.
