Meeting:
Today during Morning Meeting, we welcomed October with lots of excitement! Our calendar helper, Teddy, helped us change out the month and proudly added the first day of October to our calendar.
Our meteorologist, Kian, let the class know that today is a warm, cloudy day. We also took some time to look back at our September weather graph and analyze the information we collected throughout the month. The children counted and compared the number of cold, cool, warm, and hot days, as well as our rainy and snowy days. We then compared the number of partly cloudy, cloudy, and sunny days.
The children were quick to make some really great observations! They noticed that we had 7 warm and 7 cool days, 5 sunny, cloudy, and windy days, and zero cold, hot, and snowy days. It was wonderful to see the children using counting, comparing, and observation skills to make sense of our classroom data!
Win added another yarn ball to our "Day of School" jar, making 17 days! Wes helped guide us through our daily schedule and let his friends know what was coming next.
Question of the Day:
Our Question of the Day: “Write the first letter of your name.” Each child did a wonderful job writing their first initial and working carefully to keep their letter inside the provided box.

Math:
Today on the rug about half the children worked on writing 4 and 5. They used the Learning Without Tears methodology to practice. The specific way they practiced is using the Wet, Dry, Try boards. This has the children practicing how to form the number three times for each run though the steps. Today teachers took the children through the steps twice for each number. This way of practicing gives the children a “magical path” to follow as well as boundaries to assist them in starting and stopping in the proper place. All of these scaffold your child’s learning to help them independently write the numbers. If your child did not get a turn today they will get one tomorrow.
Children who had not worked on writing numbers yesterday and cutting on the dotted lines got a turn today. The children are all making progress at their own pace with both scissor work and number formation. Having fine motor fun at home is the best way to help your child continue to form these skills. Some examples are
Taking Lego bricks apart.
Using scissors to snip paper, slime, putty, playdoh. Playdoh scissors are a great option if you are concerned about safety and unapproved objects getting cut. If your child likes to help in the kitchen they can even use cleaned scissors to cut some veggies.
Sorting pompoms or other small objects in bottles or jars. Bonus strength building if your child uses clothes pins or tweezers to do so.
Literacy:
To start literacy today the children reviewed how to build and write the letter F. F is formed with one big line down and two little lines across. Once the children had practiced the letter from last week it was time to learn a new letter. Today’s new letter was E. The children were excited because they noticed that E is very similar to F. As teachers guided the children through building and then writing the letter with one big line down and three little lines across the focus was on having one line at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom. E is definitely a letter little ones often make too many little lines across or do not place them properly. While it is adorable when they write E with 12 little lines across we work to consistently get children to use three properly placed lines. Before writing each letter on the dry erase boards teachers went around to help each child to properly place their fingers for a tripod grip.
Today the children enjoyed the stories for the quiet and noisy tongue biting sounds. For the quiet tongue biting sound (th as in thin, think, and thunder) t blows quiet air on h who is very chilly. For the noisy tongue biting sound (th as in these, those, and them) t keeps blowing air on h and h gets upset. The two letters then start stamping their feet on the line below them, making noise.
Choice Time:
Today during Choice Time, the children had so many wonderful ways to explore, create, and play! At the easel, the children loved using dot markers along with materials from our Creation Station. It is always so interesting to watch how each child uses the same materials in their own unique way. Their creativity and individual ideas really shine through!
At the Playdoh table, we provided scissors, wooden letters, and numbers for the children to explore. They practiced letter and number recognition while also strengthening those important fine motor muscles as they rolled, pressed, cut, and manipulated the Playdoh.
Some of our friends have been especially interested in floor puzzles, so we made a variety of puzzles available during Choice Time. Puzzles are a wonderful way for children to develop problem-solving skills, visual-spatial awareness, concentration, and persistence. We love watching the children work together, try different pieces, and celebrate when they discover where a piece belongs!
Our Dramatic Play area was also a busy place today. The children have been enjoying pretending to play family, and it is especially sweet to watch them cook meals, care for their babies, and take on different family roles together. Through this kind of imaginative play, children are developing language, social skills, cooperation, and empathy.
Meanwhile, our Block Area was filled with some very interesting construction projects! The children were busy designing and building garages, schools, buildings, and even a museum. Their structures sparked lots of conversation, planning, and collaboration as they brought their ideas to life.
Closing Meeting:
At the end of the day teachers finally finished The Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess.
