Whole Group Times

While today is not Monday, it is the first day of our school week, so that means that we assign this week's classroom jobs. The children were excited to find out their new jobs! After the students were in the know, it was time to complete the meeting jobs. Eyza started us off by counting up the children to see if everyone was in attendance. Then it was Sloane's turn to come up and complete the calendar as well as report the date to her classmates. Arianna helped us with the number line on our first "trading day" day 10 of JK. Today, after Arianna added a cube to our ones jar, she traded the 10 cubes for a tens stick. We will explain this in more depth and with visuals at our curriculum night next Tuesday. But essentially, using base ten blocks to keep track of the days of school is beneficial in JK because it makes numbers hands on and easy to understand.

  • Builds number sense: Children see how numbers grow as they add another day.

  • Teaches place value: Ones can be grouped into a ten, helping children understand that 10 ones = 1 ten.

  • Makes counting meaningful: Children connect counting the days of school to a real life classroom routine.

  • Encourages counting skills: Students practice counting forward and recognizing numbers as we also write the numbers on our number line.

  • Develops math vocabulary: Children use words such as ones, tens, more, fewer, and equal.

  • Supports problem solving: Children can think about questions such as, “How many days until we reach 20?” or “How many tens are in 50?”

Charlie helped tell her fellow JK students the forecast for the day, and Alexander filled us in on the schedule for the day. Then it was time to sign in! Today the children had to try and recall which of the Lively Letters that they learned last week was the "quiet one". After everyone signed in, it was time to review /p/ and /b/.

During our Literacy block we learned our next two Lively Letters /t/ and /d/.

t-Quiet Tongue Dancing Sound

"What am I doing when I make this sound?" 't' That's right! I'm using my tongue! What is it doing? It sounds like my tongue is tapping, dancing up there behind my teeth, doesn't it? We can call this the tongue dancing sound. Let's see if our voices are on or off. Oh it's the quiet tongue dancing sound! This tongue is quietly dancing on the op of the mouth right. behind the teeth. See how he keeps his arms out for balance while he quietly dances? He has sneakers on. so he won't make much noise. I wonder who his noisy partner is?"

d-Noisy Tongue Dancing Sound

"Did you know that t has a noisy partner? You're still going to tap your tongue up there, but this time, put your voice on. What sound does it make? d-d-d This is our noisy tongue dancing sound. He's still a tongue that's tapping up there, but he likes to make a lot of noise! The fist thing you see when you look at this guy is his very big tummy, which he likes to tap on like it's a noisy drum - d-d-d! When you see that circle first, tap on it like a noisy drum. d-d-d!"

We also started on week 2 of Heggerty! This week we will work on building on what we learned last week. We continued working on rhyming, segmenting, initial sounds, ending sounds, alphabet knowledge, and language awareness.

At the end of the day Ida, this week's Librarian, chose My Monster and Me for our story.

Classroom Explorations

The beginning of a new week means new sensory trays! This week's sensory trays have a fun material called Pluffle. Along with the Pluffle the children were given different size jars, scoopers of various sizes, and some beads and gems. This evening, the season turns from summer to fall. So today, the children did a "farewell to summer" project at the activity table. They had watercolors, flower stickers, butterfly stickers, and washi tape with flowers and butterfly designs. We were so impressed with the creativity we saw with these materials! We also had:

  • alphabet stamps, crayons, and Sharpie markers with heart paper at the easel

  • beading before meeting and snack after meeting at the round table

  • rainbow scratch off art at the trapezoid table before meeting, and working with Ms Sheryl after meeting

  • dollhouse

  • pretend

  • book loft

  • Magnatiles and ocean creatures and shells on the rug

  • fall leaves, cars, blocks, and gnomes at the light table

  • crafting and creating at the drawing table

Outdoor Fun!
